Meet one of our spunky new members Dan S!
How long have you been improvising?
About four years now. I recently obtained my BA in Drama from the Augustana Campus of the U of A, and a third of my education was based in Viloa Spolin Improvisation. Making the Invisible Visible since 2011!
How long have you been involved with the UIG?
This is my first year with the UIG, and I'm loving it!
What or who got you interested in improv?
I remember playing Improv games in my Drama classes during Junior High. I was already a Theatre Geek before then, but once I started learning Improv, I had a real blast! Also, watching "Whose Line is it Anyway?" on TV really inspired me.
What is something most people don’t know about UIG?
All levels of experience and different backgrounds welcomed! Drama student? Come on in! Engineer program? We'd love to have you! Philosophy Major? Does the UIG *actually* exist?
What is the best part about being a member of UIG?
Absolute fun! Who wouldn't want to be a part of a group where being a failure and embarrassing yourself on a regular basis would be considered awesome?
What advice would you give someone interested in trying improv?
As a Drama professor always told me: GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD! Don't worry about 'trying' to be clever or funny. Anyone can do that! Instead, let the scene happen organically. Have fun, trust your instincts, and let the energy in the space reward you.
Why should someone come to a UIG show?
Because at every show we give away a BRAND NEW CAR!!! ... Okay, due to budget constraints, we can't actually give you one. But coming to one of our shows is definitely an enriching experience.
The UIG is a diverse group: what is your field of study/work/interest outside of improv?
I am currently in the first year of an After Degree in Secondary Education.
Catch Dan in action at our monthly shows resuming in 2016!
