Meet co-president external of the UIG, Sarah M!
How long have you been improvising?
For 8 years, since I started in grade 10.
How long have you been involved with the UIG?
This is my third year in the club and my second year as the Co-President External.
What or who got you interested in improv?
I was in a drama class in grade 10 and my drama teacher asked me to come try out improv. I stayed late one Friday after school and just like that I was hooked. I performed in the Canadian Improv Games and in the local Nosebowl tournament. What is something most people don’t know about UIG?
UIG is not just an improv group, it's a group of friends who love to hang out and support each other. We love to play board games, watch scary movies, eat too much food and help each other with personal projects. Being in UIG is like having a team behind you, we all help each other. Just this week I got to voice a video game character for Andrew in UIG as part of his class project. We all want to see each other succeed.
What is the best part about being a member of UIG?
Having a safe place to laugh, create and de-stress at school. I am so grateful for UIG and the sanity it has provided me with. Are there are scenes or lines that have stuck with you?
Last year at our annual festival, Christina and I performed our set called Going Steady and the entire time I just felt like we were killing it. I feel supportive every time I improvise with her. My favorite line was when my character asked her, "What is your favorite position in football" and she replied with, "The runners."
What advice would you give someone interested in trying improv?
Come with an open mind and ready to fail. Seriously. Failure is needed in improv.
Why should someone come to a UIG show?
Stress relief! Come and laugh with us for two hours and forget the stress of everyday life. Also, its the cheapest improv in the city.
The UIG is a diverse group: what is your field of study/work/interest outside of improv?
I am in my fifth and final year (hopefully) of my Bachelors of Recreation, Sport and Tourism. I'm an arts kid at heart sneaking around a Phys. Ed Degree.
Anything else you want to add?
If everyone could stop yelling out "gynecologist" at improv shows, that would be really great.
You can see Sarah perform in "Going Steady" at the Notorious Festival on Friday, January 22, 2016!
